The students need to find similar short films that mix 'real' documentary-type footage and narrative.
I would be very surprised if they can't find an example in BFI shorts, or the Oscar nominated short films or best documentary short films etc.
1) Research - find films that mix documentary type footage and narrative - 'look at BFI shorts or Oscar nominated shorts. - Doesn't have to be the same context.
I think it should be a film that is recognised as being a 'quality' short film rather than the next door-neighbour experimenting with making a film as this would give the suggested format an acknowledged recognition.
2) Plan so we know what we're going to do so that it can be good quality - I'll know what days to bring the tripod in so that it isn't shaky e.g. the interviews (if that's still happening). Don't research experimental ones.
The other thing that would be needed, and apologies if this is already incorporated, is a form of closure to the narrative element as this is very much a convention of a short film (the documentary brief is for an extract).
3) Narrative
